Whether you're a longtime chiropractic patient or someone who's always been curious, this episode offers an honest, informative look at the real scope and benefits of chiropractic treatment.
Hey there, and welcome to the first podcast episode. I'm Doctor Douglas DeSalvo, and this is the DeSalvo Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Novato, California. Thanks for spending a few minutes with me today.
So today I want to talk about something that comes up almost every single week in my office. And that's the question of — what do chiropractors actually do? Because honestly, there are a lot of misconceptions out there. Some people think we just crack backs and send you on your way. Others are nervous that adjustments are dangerous. And some folks have never considered chiropractic care at all because they weren't sure it was, you know, real medicine.
So let's clear the air a little bit.
First — the big one. The cracking. When people hear that word, I can see them tense up a little. Here's what's actually happening. When I perform a spinal adjustment, I'm applying a gentle, controlled force to a specific joint in your spine. That sound you hear — that pop — is just gas releasing from the fluid inside the joint. It's the same thing that happens when you crack your knuckles. It's not bones grinding. It's not anything breaking. It's actually a completely normal, natural response from the body.
And here's what's interesting — not every adjustment even makes that sound, and that's totally fine. The goal isn't the pop. The goal is restoring normal movement to a joint that has become restricted or stuck. When joints aren't moving the way they should, the surrounding muscles tighten up, nerves can get irritated, and you start to feel it — whether that's low back pain, neck stiffness, headaches, or just a general feeling of being off.
Now, here's the thing a lot of people don't realize. Chiropractic care isn't just about back pain. Yes, that's a big part of what we do. But we also work with people dealing with headaches, shoulder tension, hip discomfort, and even issues related to posture from sitting at a desk all day. I see patients of all ages — from teenagers dealing with sports injuries, to adults navigating the stress of daily life, to older patients who just want to stay mobile and active.
Another myth I hear pretty often is that once you start chiropractic care, you have to keep coming forever. That's just not true. Some people come in for a specific issue, we address it, and they're on their way. Others choose to come in regularly for maintenance, kind of like how you go to the dentist even when your teeth don't hurt. Both approaches are completely valid. It really comes down to what you need and what your goals are.
So what can you do right now, today, to support your spinal health? A few simple things. First, pay attention to how you're sitting. If you're slouched forward with your head down — looking at a phone or a screen — your neck is under a lot of extra stress. Try to bring that screen up to eye level and take breaks to move around. Second, stay hydrated. The discs in your spine actually depend on water to stay healthy and absorb shock properly. And third — move. Even short walks throughout the day make a real difference for your back.
Now, if you've been dealing with persistent pain, stiffness, or discomfort that just won't go away — that's when it's time to come in and get evaluated. You don't have to be in crisis mode. In fact, the earlier we catch something, the easier it usually is to address. A proper evaluation helps us understand exactly what's going on and build a plan that's specific to you.
Here in Novato, our goal at DeSalvo Chiropractic is to help you feel better, move better, and stay that way for the long haul. We're a community practice, and we truly care about the people we serve.
