Why Posture Matters More Than Ever in a Screen-Focused World
Novato chiropractor Dr. Douglas DeSalvo explains how hours of screen time strain your neck and back, plus three simple posture habits you can start today.
In this episode, Dr. Douglas DeSalvo of DeSalvo Chiropractic in Novato explores why posture has become one of the most pressing health concerns of our time. With most people spending hours each day hunched over phones, tablets, and computers, the effects on the spine and overall health are hard to ignore. Dr. DeSalvo goes beyond the basics, explaining how poor posture impacts far more than just your back. Tune in to learn what's really happening to your body and what steps you can take to protect your posture in a screen-focused world.
Hey there, and welcome back. I'm Doctor Douglas DeSalvo from DeSalvo Chiropractic here in Novato, and today I want to talk about something that affects just about every single person listening to this right now. And that's posture. Specifically, what's happening to our posture in a world where we are all staring at screens for hours and hours every day.
Now, here's the thing. Posture isn't just about standing up straight so your mom stops nagging you. It actually has a pretty significant impact on how you feel every single day. Your energy levels, your breathing, your mood, your neck and back pain — all of it connects back to how you're holding your body.
And right now, in this screen-focused world we're living in, most of us are in really rough shape when it comes to posture. I see it every day in my practice.
So let me break this down for you.
When you sit and look at a phone or a laptop, your head naturally drifts forward. It just does. And here's what's interesting — your head weighs somewhere around ten to twelve pounds when it's sitting right on top of your spine where it belongs. But for every inch it shifts forward, the effective load on your neck and upper spine increases dramatically. We're talking about the muscles and joints in your neck working much harder than they were ever designed to. Hour after hour. Day after day.
That's where a lot of that nagging neck tightness comes from. That tension across the tops of your shoulders. Those headaches that seem to show up out of nowhere. Your body is working overtime just to hold your head up.
Now, the mid and lower back tell a similar story. When you're slumped over a keyboard or curled up on a couch scrolling, your lower back loses that natural curve it's supposed to have. The discs, the muscles, the joints — they all start taking load in ways they weren't designed for. Over time, that adds up. And it's one of the biggest reasons I see people walking through my door with low back pain.
Here's what I want you to take away from this. Posture problems don't usually happen overnight, and they don't have to stay that way either. Small, consistent changes can make a real difference.
So what can you start doing today? First — set a reminder on your phone, every thirty to forty-five minutes, to just get up and move. Walk around for two minutes. Shake it out. Your spine loves movement and it does not love staying in one position for a long time. Second, when you're sitting, try to keep your screen at eye level. Whether that's a monitor stand at your desk or just holding your phone a little higher. It sounds simple, and it is — but it takes some of the strain off your neck right away. And third, try a little chin tuck exercise throughout the day. Gently pull your chin straight back, like you're making a double chin. Hold it for a few seconds. That helps wake up the muscles that are supposed to be keeping your head in a good position.
Now, here's when I really want you to come see us. If you're dealing with regular headaches, neck tightness that just won't quit, pain between your shoulder blades, or low back stiffness that's become your new normal — those are signs your spine could use some professional attention. A lot of people wait way too long, thinking it'll just go away on its own. Sometimes it does. But often, without addressing what's actually going on in the spine, those patterns just dig in deeper.
A chiropractic evaluation can help us figure out exactly where the stress is building up, and put together a plan to get you feeling better and moving better.
